Job Purpose:

Under general guidance, work on development and testing of engine and aftertreatment systems. As a Combustion and Performance Engineer, you will work on simulation, testing, calibration, validation and development of modern engine and emissions control systems for our Locomotive, Marine, and Electric Power Generation product lines. You will assume a significant role, as part of a team, with increasing emphasis on emissions testing, combustion recipe development, analyzing, identifying, and applying engineering techniques to solve problems and making recommendations. Significant coordination and interfacing are required across organizations to execute job responsibilities.

Education / Training:

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a closely related field and 5 years of experience performing test, simulation and validation in the heavy machinery, automotive or equivalent industry;

• Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a closely related field and 3 years of experience performing test, simulation and validation in the heavy machinery, automotive or equivalent industry.

Key Job Elements:

• Test and verify engine combustion, fuel systems, aftertreatment system on test engine, locomotives and in field applications;

• 1-D simulation of engine and system level performance to optimize engine performance, and after-treatment hardware;

• Plan and manage engine testing, DOE, combustion recipe development, data collection and processing for steady-state, transient, cold, altitude, and emissions certification;

• Thermal and fluid sciences investigation of product, system and/or technology problems and recommending appropriate action, owning problem resolution, and documenting results;

• Support engine build and field service groups;

• Product development and continuous improvement issue management.

Qualifications and Experience:

Basic Qualifications:

• Experience/ familiarity with heavy duty diesel engines;

• Ability to lead/drive resolution of complex technical issues;

• Demonstrated ability to analyze data to make decisions related to engine performance and emissions;

• Excellent organization, communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills;

• Emphasis on initiative and strong technical insight;

• Demonstrated clear commitment to customer satisfaction.

Top Candidates Will Also Have:

• Experience/ familiarity with Engine dynamometer and vehicle testing;

• Familiarity with off-highway emissions regulations;

• GT-Suite (Thermodynamic modeling);

• Experience utilizing engine testing, calibration and data analysis tools (e.g. avl concerto, CANape, modeFRONTIER, MATLAB, Simulink);

• Desire to work in a fast paced, team environment.

Essential and Physical Activities Functions

• Strength – Position typically involves work in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment. Frequent/constant sitting. Occasional standing and walking. Occasional light to medium-level lifting or carrying (up to 30 pounds);

• Motion – Position regularly requires standard motions associated with working in an office environment. Depending on assigned project, position may occasionally require motions involved in an industrial working environment, including some low to intense levels of pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, crouching, stooping, kneeling, reaching, grasping;

• Vision/Hearing Requirements – Frequent verbal communications, including both talking and hearing;

• Work Environment – Position is typically located in an office environment with occasional visits to an industrial environment which may include a non-temperature-controlled environment, as well as exposure to noise (85+ decibels), occasional exposure to temperature changes, heavy machinery and other hazardous working conditions requiring the use of PPE. Position may require travel as necessary, both domestic and international;

• Emotional Demands – Very high level of responsibility. Must be able to coordinate diverse aspects of a project. Requires significant interpersonal skills while sustaining very high standards;

• Safety – Position may occasionally require the use of Personal Protective Equipment during visits to industrial areas.
