Naval Supply Systems Command TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANT (FREIGHT) in Key West, Florida

Summary You will serve as a TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANT (FREIGHT) in the Shipping Section, Warehousing Division, NAS Key West Detachment of NAVSUP FLT LOGISTICS CNTR JACKSONVILLE. Responsibilities You will make technically accurate decisions and provide solutions for shipments of explosives, hazardous material, classified material, high priority, high value, live animals and other shipments of a complicated nature. You will arrange with carriers to provide special terminal facilities and services such as, specialized carrier equipment, special highway permits, police escorts, accessorial services. You will advise procurement personnel on freight rates and shipping procedures to be included in requests for proposals, purchase orders, and local contract services. You will plan and coordinate volume movements of freight with the back office and all concerned to ensure that all equipment, i.e. trucks, cranes, forklifts, etc. and manpower are at the proper place at the planned time. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-06) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: applying a knowledge of transportation regulations and laws that relate to the movement of a wide range of specialized shipments such as oversized, heavy haul, extremely fragile, hazardous, security risk, live animals or other temperature sensitive materials, equipment, or instruments. Examples of specialized experience may demonstrate the following: 1) Assigning transportation priorities and selects appropriate modes of shipment based on the needs of the customers and evaluation of justification; 2) Coordinating work efforts with other parts of the activity to develop specialized packing, loading, handling methods, practices and procedures for shipments requiring special protection; 3) Providing advice concerning availability and capacity of carrier service, safety and protection of cargo, freight rates, methods, and procedures common to the procurement of transportation services.
