Kalamazoo County Government Sheriff's Deputy-Road Patrol in Kalamazoo, Michigan

GENERAL SUMMARY

This position performs the law enforcement functions of a Deputy Sheriff for Kalamazoo County. This position provides enforcement of all criminal and traffic laws.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Duties include operating emergency vehicles and, patrolling county areas to enforce traffic laws, and responding to emergencies or other calls for assistance from the dispatcher. Investigate traffic accidents, domestic disturbances, and reports of criminal activity; conduct surveillance/searches and gather evidence.
  • Pursue suspects, issue traffic & appearance citations, make probable cause & warrant arrests, and transport suspects in custody.
  • Prepare written reports and records, including completing Vehicle Pursuit forms, Use of Force forms, arrest reports, On-the-job Injury reports, and other case-related documentation.
  • Testify in case-related court proceedings. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience

Minimum of 30 college credit hours or equivalent military training and experience, with Michigan Corrections Officer Training Council (MCOTC) certification and Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), certified/certifiable.

Must know law enforcement procedures and techniques. Must have effective written and verbal communication skills, composure during stressful situations, and basic computer skills, including experience with word processing and database data entry.

The candidate must be a citizen of the United States, 21 years of age or older, and possess a valid Michigan driver's license. Must pass a drug screen, physical/medical examination, and thorough background investigation. Must be physically able to wear and operate respiratory

protection devices and learn and apply self-defense and other procedures for dealing with hostile or violent citizens. Upon hire, must become LEIN, First Aid, CPR, and AED certified.

Any individual with a felony conviction, a pending felony or misdemeanor charge, a domestic violence conviction, or an outstanding warrant is ineligible for consideration for employment.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants currently licensed through MCOLES and hired during the eligibility period will receive an initial $5,000 payment after completing their Field Training program. The remaining $5,000 will be paid upon completing their probationary period.

``` - All newly hired qualified MCOLES Academy candidates hired after January 2023 will receive an immediate $5,000.00 hiring bonus. They will receive another $5,000.00 bonus after they have successfully completed a Police Academy, the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Office Field Training program, and the probationary period.

``` - All employees employed during 2023 and beyond shall also receive the $5,000.00 hiring bonus after successfully completing the MCOLES Academy and an additional $5,000.00 upon completing the field training program.
