TITLE: Seasonal Engineering Intern

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties
Performs skilled technical work relative to the inventory and development of right-of-way
infrastructure improvement projects and facilities and other engineering related projects, especially
sidewalk inventories, mapping corrections, data gathering, and street light outages. This is a 10 week
seasonal position from approximately late May to early August.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision of an administrative superior.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

This Seasonal Position is focused on providing critical field data to support the work of the engineering
department. This work includes developing a list of prioritized sidewalk construction projects with costs
and quantity descriptions, verifying or re-mapping the correct locations of utility and stormwater
structures and appurtenances, developing a list of street light outages, and assisting in identifying trail
routes. The position term will be 10 weeks.
With support and guidance from the Assistant City Engineer, the Seasonal Assistant Technicians will
make condition evaluations and locations of infrastructure (sidewalks, streets, drainage, utility structures
and appurtenances, etc.), and other related areas; obtain photo documentation of the areas of work; upload
information to the City GIS; make measurements of needed work; make judgement decisions of the most
cost effective solution needed to resolve the problem; produce spreadsheets and cost estimates for the
required work; provide written text describing the scope of work; identify street lights that are not
functioning properly, make lists of light pole numbers, submitting repair lists and requests to Entergy, and
perform other related work as required.
Most of these duties will require the coordinated work of two persons working together. Some of these duties
will require extensive walking. Other parts of the work will require one person driving the vehicle and the
other one taking notes and making observations. Street light outage work will require work after dark. Those
late working hours will be offset by adjusting working hours on other days.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Ability to interpret sidewalk and infrastructure standard details and construction specifications;
ability to prepare construction sketches; ability to photograph site conditions and upload that
information to city GIS and computer software; ability to compute quantities from plans or survey
notes; ability to prepare excel spreadsheet cost estimates; ability to write text descriptions of the
scope of work in Microsoft Word; ability to communicate effectively using phone, text, and Outlook
email; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to understand and
follow verbal and written instructions; ability to maintain records and to prepare reports; ability to
work independently and to make sound decisions in routine matters, ability to work safely in areas
near traffic.
Education
High school senior or equivalent. College-level courses in engineering are a plus.
Experience
None required.
Substitution
Any equivalent combination of education and exp erience.
Special Requirements
Must possess a valid drivers license and a clean driving record. Must be familiar with Microsoft
Excel, Word, and Outlook.
