City of Eastpointe Circulation Aide in Eastpointe, Michigan

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Head of Circulation performs a variety of circulation tasks related to the operation of the library.

Essential Job Functions
  • Works at the circulation desk; schedule may include evening and weekend hours.
  • Circulates, renews, distributes and maintains all library materials. Empties book drop.
  • Registers patrons and collects fines and fees for overdue and damaged items.
  • Assists with deliveries and interlibrary loan transactions and/or distribution
  • Refers reference and informational questions as well as questions on the use of library materials and equipment to reference librarians.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries about library programs and services.
  • Mending and processing library materials.
  • Assists reference librarian in closing the library.
  • Professionalism, patience, and a solid understanding of policies and procedures.
  • Performs other library tasks as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of general office procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of standard library equipment including automated circulation system and public access computers. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously; ability and desire to serve the public of all ages
  • Must have the physical ability, stamina, mobility and manual dexterity to stand and walk for an entire shift.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, and push a loaded book truck weighing 120 pounds.  
  • Ability to work as a team member. 
  • Knowledge of basic library materials, policies and procedures as found in the library personnel manual and the Eastpointe Memorial Library employee manual.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with others in person and on the telephone. The employee is frequently required to view and produce written and computerized documents. The employee is frequently required to access and retrieve books, periodicals and other materials that vary in weight, size and shape and may be located at heights ranging from floor level to over-head level. The employee is frequently required to access various locations within the library and attend meetings in locations away from the building. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items or light or moderate weight.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office setting within a public library. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
