One camp is located on-site at 100 North Arlington Ave and 159 N. Munn Ave, East Orange, NJ, serving Pre-K through 8th Grade. Meanwhile, our offsite camp at Lincoln Avenue School, 216 Lincoln Ave, Orange, NJ 07050, invites students from First Grade through entering 8th Grade.Join us in creating an exhilarating summer experience for children across diverse age groups! SALARY: $18.38 - $19.25 p/h POSITION SUMMARY:Under the general direction of the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director is responsible for overseeing all program aspects of the day-to-day operations of the Camp Program. Duties include, but not limited to directing camp program activities and special events, through the coordination of staff and resources, providing supervision to ensure the program is meeting the quality standards of the YMCA and American Camping Association (ACA) accreditation. The supervision of the campsite each day of the program. Overseeing the smooth operation of camp, and handling issues as they arise with the support of the camp director. Implement required trainings and meetings. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Assist in planning and implementing camp programs and activities prior to the start of camp according to ACA standards. Carry out plans during the camp season, ensuring activities are well thought out, diverse, progressive, challenging and fun for the campers. Have copies of schedules for all counselors, office staff, and Camp Director.Assist in the planning and implementation of 24 hours of pre-camp training prior to the start of camp according to ACA standards.Supervise and coach counselors with the goal of developing a cohesive and highly motivated staff team.Develop resources for counselors offering guidance and direction where needed in areas of nature, arts and crafts, sports, games, dramatics and music.Oversee transportation and arrangements for camp trips and special events, adjusting schedules as needed and adhering to YMCA and ACA safety guidelines.Promote the program through community public relations and other marketing channels as directed. Attend and participate in camp open houses.Consistently greet campers and parents with a smile and with enthusiasm. Learn campers’ names.Respond to campers and parents needs promptly and in a professional, courteous manner.Review camper progress and handle issues at camp according to YMCA and ACA standards and procedures. Responsible for keeping and monitoring attendance records. Call parents if campers have been absent more than two (2) days in a row. Document all issues and communications with parents.Support camp administration in the development and execution of all programs, activities and special events, in line with ACA standards. Submit all reports, special plans, schedule changes and evaluations as requested by the Director.Adhere to all other ACA standards, especially maintaining camper safety as a top priority. Ensure supervision standards as detailed in the YMCA’s Code of Conduct are followed at all times. Report immediately any concerns to the Director.Assist in communicating weekly camp activities and information to parents. Maintain positive relations with campers, parents, and staff members, in conjunction with camp, as well as bus drivers, pool site staff and tripe site staff.Assist the Camp Director in evaluating the camp program.Uphold, model, teach and put the four (4) core values of the YMCA into action in all camp activities everyday: Caring, Honesty, Respect and ResponsibilityCreate a positive and nurturing learning environment to instill and encourage youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:High School Diploma, Associate/Bachelors Degree in Education, youth work, recreation or related preferred or equivalent experience.Five (5) years’ experience in teaching, youth work, recreation or related field.Two (2) years’ experience preferred in a leadership position in a camp setting or youth work.Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to relate to children and communicate in various venues, i.e., public speaking, presentations.Ability to facilitate learning in others and ability to supervise others.Understanding age specific characteristics of children and positive behavior management techniques.CPR and First Aid Certifications.PHYSICAL DEMANDSMust be capable of being on your feet for long periods and be able to actively supervise children in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Must be capable of bending, kneeling, squatting and lifting 30 pounds. Must be able to visually account for all children in the program, whether inside or outside. Must be able to hear whistle or alarms. Clear speaking voice is needed to command control of group.
