Colorado Department Of Transportation Equipment Mechanic w/ Snow Plowing - Divide in Divide, Colorado

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

This position is only open to Colorado state residents.

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Working as a CDOT mechanic will provide you with the opportunity to put your mechanical knowledge and skills to the test. CDOT has a variety of small and large equipment, different makes and models, as well as equipment ranging in age from 0-20+ years of age. You will often have challenging and peculiar issues to diagnose and troubleshoot. The equipment may need to be worked on in the field where it breaks down, or it can be brought back to a small shop. Our shop mechanics coordinate with with the field mechanics to transfer equipment to them if more tools and space are required to complete the repairs. Our heavy equipment mechanics are responsible for ensuring the readiness and operational safety of the equipment 24 hours/7 days a week in all weather conditions.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Repair or replace metal and fiberglass parts on vehicles and equipment using electric or air sanders, body hammers, body dollies, gas welders, electric welders (arc, mig), oxy/propylene torch, plasma cutter, hydraulic jacks and porta power. Repairs are made using body fillers, fiberglass mat, cloth, resin, and other specialized plastics as technology changes on a constant basis. Repair or replace inner mechanisms such as door latches, hinge pins, locks, hood and trunk latches and window regulators. Re-aligning vehicle parts that are out of adjustment caused by normal wear and tear or as a result of an accident. Some examples of work performed by this position are; using a plasma cutter to remove side pockets on dump beds and welding in replacement parts, cutting out rusted parts of equipment and welding in new metal patches and blending the repair with the existing metal, removing cab shields and fabricating replacement cab shields. This position would also perform some repairs associated with accidents such as removing damaged parts and replacing with new parts or fabricating replacement parts. Repairs that would be associated with this position are; engine overhauls, transmission replacements, or overhauls, structural welding repairs such as truck frames, and hitch mounting frames. Safely and proficiently drive and operate a variety of equipment necessary to achieve the objectives in the patrol work plan. Operate and maintain equipment such as tandem trucks, loader, backhoe, motor grader, sweepers, etc. to effectively support the skilled labor during maintenance activities. Ensure equipment is in safe operating condition. Complete pre- and post-trip inspections, via paper and electronically. Perform and assist in equipment maintenance and repair. Learn to operate and maneuver new pieces/types of equipment and related technology systems. Maneuver equipment safely in and out of hard to access locations and areas that have buildings, guard rail, slopes, trees, or hidden hazards. Operate technology systems in the equipment to help with operational decision-making, inspections, and maintenance. Example systems include Truck and Equipment Controller Systems, Maintenance Decision Support Systems (MDSS), electronic fleet management systems, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) System, etc. Develop proficiency in operations in three key areas: equipment maintenance
