Geisinger System Director Medical Health Physics in Danville, Pennsylvania

Job Summary

Oversees systemwide medical and health physics programs. Develops the workforce, creates an environment of teamwork, trust and cooperation, drives for sustainable results and builds technical and leadership capability throughout the team. Manages the Radiation Safety & Protection Program for the system including radiological physics and protection operations in Research, Clinical Labs, Blood Bank, Radioactive Waste, Fluoroscopy, Diagnostic X-Ray, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Nursing, Radiation Oncology for protection and licensing activities, Cardiology and other areas using ionizing radiation sources, lasers, and or magnetic resonance imaging. Ensures regulatory compliance in radiological operations and other areas of oversight through a program of auditing and process improvement for all locations where radiation sources are used.

Job Duties

  • Plans, organizes, and directs a comprehensive program of radiological physics and radiation protection services designed to promote maximum benefit from the use of medical and research-related ionizing radiation sources while minimizing radiation risk to employees, visitors, patients, and to the surrounding community.

  • Is responsible for Radiation Dose Monitoring Program, compliance, and improvement planning

  • Maintains Federal, State, and local Radioactive Material Licenses, Permits, and Registrations.

  • Provides oversight and ensures effectiveness of the Radiation Safety Committee

  • Ensures system compliance with Agreement State controls

  • Provides the necessary radiation physics support to promote and sustain national accreditation and licensures for diagnostic imaging and other clinical program areas.

  • In conjunction with Health Physics leadership, Risk Management, and Performance Improvement, evaluates all radiological incidents, near misses, and variances for root cause, effective corrective action plans, and effective implementation of plans.

  • Oversees the diagnostic imaging program consisting of performance evaluations of radiation-producing machines, image quality enhancement, gamma camera quality control testing, shielding evaluation, and radiological physics support to the diagnostic and therapeutic administration of radiopharmaceuticals.

  • Supervises the clinical privileging and credentialing process for physicians as it relates to laser and fluoroscopy use.

  • Promotes a radiation safety conscious atmosphere, and develops a partnering relationship with Authorized Users (AU s) and employees using radiation sources.

  • Reviews and approves contracts for leased radiation sources and other contracted radiological services as required by Radiology.

  • Develops and delivers educational programs to enhance radiation protection and radiological physics understanding to include radiation worker training, new employee orientations, education for residents, fellows, and students of allied health schools, and continuing education for Health Physics staff.

  • Assures completion of and coordinates review and revision of required departmental policy manuals including safety, administration, and operations of the Medical Health Physics department.

Position Details

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4 years of leadership experience in a complex, multi-site healthcare organization

  • 4 years of medical health physics experience

  • 3 years of experience as Radiation Safety Officer or Associate Radiation Safety Officer

  • 3 years of experience as Laser Safety Officer or Associate Laser Safety Officer

Education

Master's Degree-Healthcare Related Degree (Required)

Experience

Minimum of 4 years-Managing people, processes, or projects (Required)

Certification(s) and License(s)
