Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:NY HELPS This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title maybe filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS, or 55 b/c, candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:1. A license and current registration to practice as a practical nurse in New York State OR;2. A limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State OR;3. An application on file for a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State. If you are appointed under either qualification "2" or "3," you must obtain your license within one year of the date your limited permit was issued, or steps will be taken to remove you from the position.COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Eligible List Appointment: Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for this title. If you are on the Civil Service eligible list for this title, you may receive a canvass letter. You must complete and return it as instructed on the letter. To qualify for the eligible list, candidates must have:1. A license to practice as a practical nurse in New York State OR;2. A limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State OR;3. Candidates must be appointed immediately following graduation from an approved school of practical nursing in New York State to qualify. Section 70.1 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title salary grade 08 or above deemed eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. To qualify for transfer, candidates must have:1. A license to practice as a practical nurse in New York State OR;2. A limited permit to practice as a practical nurse in New York State OR;3. Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Licensed Practical Nurse position in the New York State School for the Blind (NYSSB). Duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following:• Carry out clinic rounds, record and give medications promptly;• Assess health program for service delivery, observe and record symptoms of illness accurately and objectively;• Treat problems from standing orders;• Maintain specific health records and reports on each student; and • Communicate appropriately with students, direct care staff, parents and other health agencies with tact, confidence and in accordance with school procedures.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent, competitive 12-month appointment OR a permanent non-competitive, 12-month appointment. At this time, agencies may recruit and hire employees by making temporary appointments. In May 2024, if a temporary NY HELPS employee is satisfactorily performing in the position, the appointment will be changed from temporary pending Civil Service Commission Action to permanent non-competitive and the official probationary period will begin. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. At the time of hire, candidates are required to possess a license as a practical nurse, or a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse, or have an application on file for a limited permit to practice as a practical nurse. Continued employment as a Licensed Practical Nurse is dependent upon maintaining a license to practice as a practical nurse. Failure to maintain a license to practice as a practical nurse will result in removal from employment. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. The work schedule for this position includes hours of Sunday through Thursday, 3:00pm to 11:00pm. This position leads to a maximum salary of $57,708 based on annual performance advances. The salaries listed above include an annual $4,000 state-wide geographic pay differential. Based on this position’s location, in addition to the listed base salary, this position also receives an annual $4,000 Statewide geographic pay differential, and an annual $575 inconvenience pay.
